My MM20 Notebook PC Is Getting Old…

Published by Ezra under Computers/Gadgets, Daily Life, Junk

My mm20 Notebook is starting to really show it’s age. I pondered that last night as I was using photoshop, and trying to play iTunes in the background.

I must admit that I have kept this computer longer than I have ever kept another one, but that is mostly because I have been as yet unable to find a suitable replacement. (it is a sub-2lb ultraprotable)

Oh well, I suppose it is time to start shopping.

Podcast Kit Arrived, Expect Project Launch Mar 1st.

Well my Podcast Kit has arrived, and I am quite pleased with the quality of it. Especially the microphone.  I have started to work with it, and looking ahead, I expect to launch the first episode of “Stray Poetry” On the 1st Of March, and a new show each, and every Saturday thereafter. Please watch here for more info. Just for a teaser; the title of the first show is: “Napoleon” I hope you will subscribe, and listen.

I intend to add it to the iTunes listing, and also have it as a direct subscribe here on the Blog,  as well as more info, and some research links here.

I will also attempt to syndicate it on Broadcast Radio once I have worked all the bugs out of the process. (Six months to a year from now)

This is not simply a program of poetry, no it will be a mixture of poetry, prose, and wit. A melding of poetic ideas, and mental images.

Stay tuned for more.

Air, Podcast Kit, Trip, Guitar Hero III

Posted To http://www.straypoetry.comBy Ezra Hilyer

air

I looked at the new Macbook Air yesterday, at the Penn State computer store. It certainly is slim, sexy, and sleek, but I was moderately unimpressed with the performance (in the short test I put it through) probably due in large part to the slow drive.  I did appreciate the screen; it was bright, crisp and clean. As I have mentioned before, I am looking for a replacement for my older Sharp MM20 notebook, and so that was my reason for consideration.

However, I am now leaning toward spending the little extra, and getting a Macbook Pro instead. I intend to do more audio, and graphic editing on the go now, so I think that this would be a wiser choice for my needs than the Air.

behringer

I ordered a Behringer Podcast Studio Kit from Amazon. I have been wanting to get into podcasting, and so I will. expect to see some podcasts from me soon. I picked this particular kit because of the price, and quality. I read a few reviews, and researched a few other manufacturers, and so I settled on this one. I would have gotten the firewire version, but as I have not yet made the jump to mac, I will just use the USB version for now. It is supposed to arrive Via UPS tomorrow. Continue Reading »

The Iphonation

Published by Ezra under Computers/Gadgets, Everything, Ideas

I was brainstorming a few days ago, and had the idea that a site to develop would be like a community of iPhone users, and Touch users that would be a kind of ‘microsphere’ on the net of like minded users with a home applet that would serve as a sort of twitter/jaiku hybrid (with a slightly different feel, more of a global location based discussion, when you are within a definable range of another user they would become part of the neighborhood that is your interaction group, and they would be able to see your activity automatically)

Anyway, I thought the name Iphonation would be a good url, but when I searched for it (no surprise) it was taken…. Doesn’t look like it has been updated in like a year and a half, but I doubt I would have the cash they would want for it anyway.

Oh well.. Next idea.

Music For Work, Podcasts For Play.

I love music. All kinds, and forms have some appeal, some more than others- but still, I feel that I can appreciate the art forms inherent in music. I carry around a fair variety of songs in my DAP, but also, I enjoy pod-casts.  When i am at work, I will listen to music, I have it going all day long, but when I am at home, or relaxing I usually listen to pod-casts.

I find that my mind is stretched with concentration at work, and music calms my mind, but when I am relaxed is when I can become engaged in the thought provoking world of pod-casts. NPR is a great source of info, and I can better digest it when I am not thinking of a thousand other things.

Managing My Media Collection

Published by Ezra under Computers/Gadgets

I have a large media collection. some 120GB in total. I have been working on organizing these for about 2 weeks off and on. I feel that last night I finally made some real progress. Much of the data has until now been archived on data CDs, but as of now I have moved all backups to single, or dual layer DVDs.

I have my eye on a 500GB external USB/Firewire drive to keep easy access to the data. I am tired of always swapping DVDs when I am looking for a file that is not on my notebook.

I don’t trust the cloud, I have a hangup about really having access to my data.

I would like to find a way to have a constant sync between the cloud and my data drive.

Tethered To Music

Published by Ezra under Computers/Gadgets, Daily Life

music

I live my life in short blips of inspiration, the voids of which are filled with music. I like to always have my canal-phones in while I am working, and unless I need to talk to someone, I am involved in the song I am listening to at the moment.

My library is vastly wide in it’s array of styles, and so my daily listening is as varied as the thousand thoughts that enter my mind in a given day.  Sometimes I long for a song just for the memory that it recalls to my tired brain.

Even now as I write this I am listening to the theme song for ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ and who knows what next on the shuffle list… I have been immersed in music ever since I bought my first Sony Mini Disc player about 10 years or more ago, and though paltry in comparison to the 160GB+ that one can carry about now, it was amazing to have a small device that would supply music to my ears all day on one battery.

I Upgraded The Firmware For The P2

Samsung

The new firmware for the YP-P2 came out yesterday, and so I went ahead and installed it. I think that it is a true upgrade from the previous version. FM recording is a nice touch, and the games are fun to toy with. But what I like the most is the ‘On The Go File Deletion’ feature. That is something that always seems to be lacking from high end PMP devices.

The Apple iPod is one such device, they insist on management by iTunes, but there are some times when you just want to get that bloody annoying song off the device RIGHT NOW!! When i had one (For a brief time) I would use the song rating system to mark songs for future deletion. (one star meant it was time to go)

With the P2 I have been teetering on the edge of like/dislike for some time.  I still am not certain if I will end up choosing it over another device. But for now, I will stick with it.

The Perfect PMP Companion To The ITs? Maybe….

Well, I ordered an 8gb Samsung P2 from Amazon to compliment my 770. (and soon N810) I got this one for a few reasons:

First, I am not an ipod guy, I like to be at-least a little different, and try out other kinds of gadgets.

Second, I have a Motorola S9 stereo Bluetooth headset which I really like, and I wanted to cut the wires without having to get a dongle.

Third: With the bluewave support to be able to dial out on my cell without taking it out of the bag, I mean I pull out my mp3 player about 5 times as much as my cell, and this would let me take calls, and make them without touching the phone. (yes I could do that with voice-dial on the headset, but sometimes just punching in the numbers is nice.

Fourth, and what i wanted most: Bluetooth file transfer (though the sites that I read the reviews on failed to say that it was OPP vs FTP.

——

In short I got it because of the Bluetooth. I thought I could transfer files back and forth between the IT and the P2 (like I can with my phone, I have FTP profile on the phone, so I can access the 6gb card in the phone like a remote memory key)  I wanted to be able to do that with the P2, and that way if there was a song that I wanted to remove I didn’t have to wait until I got back to my pc to sync back, and remove the file. I could just browse to it on the 770 and delete it right there, and if I downloaded a file on the run, i could just drop it into he appropriate folder on the P2.
But, no.. With OPP Vs. FTP I can only send a file at a time to the 770, and vice-versa. The limits what i wanted it for, and it bothers me. How hard would it have been to give it FTP? Anyway, that is my impression of the P2, good player, but limited….. Just…like….every…other…one.

Testing Out A Laptop For A Customer

Published by Ezra under Computers/Gadgets, Everything

I am typing this on a customers laptop, a big huge 17″ screen laptop. One that you would NEVER wish to carry around with you for very long… I compared it with my sub-2 lbs ultra-portable, and there are not words to express my happiness that I do not have to lug this thing around with me everywhere.

My backpack is heave enough already! I don’t need this to make it worse!!
